Don't change, we have ten times more style than those across the pond. Except Italy, of course.

Yes, most hotels either have an iron in the room or they'll be able to bring one up for you.

The thing that always shouts "Ami" to me is sweats - sweatshirts (usually with the name of a college or fraternity on it), even sweat pants, and of course sneakers with everything - and not the cool, laid-back vintage adidas ones but the ones that actually look like they were meant for track and field but were never used for that and kept gleaming white instead. Also agree about the basecaps, just don't do it. The same is true for souvenir pins.

Jeans and a tee are fine, so are khakis and a shirt or a sweater. But most importantly: Enjoy your trip!

Just wear some nice jeans( no holes or totally faded) and a T-Shirt.Or some slacks with a botton down shirt. Very few germans wear baseballcaps. And you see a lot of people with backpacks.

Don't know about steam irons.

Heidelberg is an EXCELLENT suggestion! Been going there for years!
A baseball game would also be a great idea if he has never been. A ride on the ferry or a few stops to some of the City's well known tourist spots like Times Square, Rockefeller Plaza (check out Top of the Rock while you're there if you can) and end the day with a trip to Heidelberg.
Wait....maybe a trip to Wo Hop would be more to his interest!
even better idea....... http://churrascariaplataforma.com/
it's a carnivore's heaven on earth!

I assume your friend knows what his cousin likes to do, and could come up with better ideas than strangers on here. I'll just give my typical suggestions:

Yankee Game (or just take the tour of the stadium if it's not the baseball season)
Central Park
Grand Central (avoid during morning and evening rush hours)
Staten Island Ferry (avoid during morning and evening rush hours)
Coney Island

How about the Heidelberg Restaurant? Hopefully they visit on a Saturday.
On Saturday evenings, they have live music and the finest German beer.

Don't wear hiking boots. Let your hair get messed up.
